Remix of a Classic Rolling Stones Song

This is one of the better remixes I've heard of a classic song. 
It's definitely worth listening to, both because it's a Rolling Stones song and because it's a good track.
This piece is a side project from one of LA's own music industry experts, Reece McLughlin (BeatLab Records), aka Reecifer.

This is a letter to the manager of Avalon from one of the people who attended the Lee Burridge event just last Saturday. If you remember, the Electric Daisy Carnival was taking place this same weekend, and DJ's from Friday night's E.D.C. schedule were 'rumored' as special guests at Avalon on Saturday night. Sure enough, after Lee Burridge was done spinning, James Zabiela and Sasha showed up (unannounced to the crowd) and put on an hour and a half set between the two of them. This customer did not make it to see the two guests....

First known for his dj role in the ground-breaking, Grammy award-winning, hip-hop troupe, Digable Planets, this pioneer comes through town offering a different taste to his musical palette: his electronic blending skills. Over his 20 years in the business, he has amassed countless 'micro-sounds' (little blurbs of sound from recordings) and somehow blended them together. This Thursday night, he is blending them togther for your dancing and listening enjoyment.

You and Music? Check the Connection (Music)

 As we all wander along life's path, surrounded by increasing uncertainties, one thing should become more and more clear: our self-knowledge.  For example, I have a good grasp on my relationship with martial arts, with writing, and with music. I know my musical tastes, I am very familiar with what sounds I like, and I stay open-minded for new tunes that come my way. But, my connection with music received a wake-up call recently, as I watched an iPhone app stream real-time lyrics while an old familiar song played  blasted through my headphones. The combination of the app and the headphones helped me experience a greater depth to this track than I knew before and a greater depth of incongruity between the lyrics I sing and the real lyrics to the song. Yes, that's right, you heard it here first; I admit it:

MUSIC: Droog's First downtown Standard rooftop party: Martin Buttrich

Here's Droog's first entry into the Standard pool party season; and it looks like it might make a splash..... None other than Martin Buttrich. The famed producer from Germany, especially known for his work with Loco Dice. Personally, he's one of my favorites when I'm listening at home. But, I hope he redeems himself for his latest show (Avalon 3/6) in L.A.; in which I feel he did not give his best effort.

With all the hi jinx happening, Sunday looks to be a dynamic day:

Well, I just wanted to interject a bit..... The weather has started to comply nicely with all requests for a season change. Now, it's time to hit the gym, get a quick tan, and do whatever else you have to in order to look good in your bathing suit; 'cause this Sunday is another pool party atop the Standard downtown hotel! Although this still isn't the official start of the season, that date IS fast approaching (that's pool party season, NOT football season, for those of you needing clarification).

So, the calendars say that spring arrives on March 20th, but as we approached that day, the general 'feel' in Los Angeles about the season change was blasé at best. The weather change was sluggish, as temperatures were climbing, but still not spring-like; the plants had no blooms or smells; birds were nowhere to be found; and the people were staying indoors and dressing like it was still winter. What to do, what to do?

What quote has inspired you lately?

I love this one, not only because I dance; not only because I have volunteered at an alternative cancer treatment facility and been an unpaid writer; but also, because I have loved and been hurt:

'Work like you don't need the money;
love like you've never been hurt;
and dance like you do when no one is looking.....'


I just heard this one tonight on sports talk radio. The show's host was a bit overzealous and overly optimistic about Kobe Bryant's return from injury before the all-star break, and this is how his guest, a sports medicine doctor retorted:

"Men make plans, and God laughs."


And this, of course, is from one of my biggest childhood influences, Henry David Thoreau, in his immortal text, Walden:

"Go confidently in the direction of your dreams! Live the life you've imagined. As you simplify your life, the laws of the universe will be simpler."


Wow, these really get my juices flowing; but I've always been moved by the written word....

Special Effects

 

This photo was taken at an after hours dubstep party. The party was free, for those who paid the $12-$20 at the door to the original party.... This guy had an interesting setup.... this was a laptop with an effects projector attached. The gear is chest mounted, so he has the screen below eye level and he can focus the beam of the projector more succinctly. His entire M.O. was walking around, finding interesting nooks and crannies at the artist loft/warehouse structure we were stationed at, and adding a bit of technology and color to those nooks and crannies. Unfortunately, by the time he broke this harness out and got strapped it on, only small pockets of people remained....

Wish I could have spoken with him, but he was rather engrossed in his equipment.

You don't know anything about music

As I wander just a bit farther down my path, these last steps.....

.... have me recognizing that I may have fallen out of touch with how to appreciate music and what music's all about. You see, I think I have a feel for, and an understanding of, most genres of music. I also think that I have a qualified ear for determining good music from bad (at least, according to my taste). I can point out a familiar song from a chorus, harmony, melody, or sometimes, from just a chord. In a way, I'd say I'm in-tune with the musical hum of the planet; and no new music slips by without my notice.

But, the other day, I realized I might be 'sleep walking' through my musical experiences.

I'm unsure if the trigger was a new phone app that allowed me to read the real-time lyrics of a playing song, or if it was a friend forcing a pair headphones on me (and the world of musical bliss they invoke); but, something somewhere, along my wandering path, made me acknowledge that I might just be selling myself short; REAL short.  

You see, I know most of the words to most my favorite songs. And I admit that I sing along to many of them. But in this singing, I am shutting off my ability to take in the nuances of the song. I may not know the correct lyrics, or I may have a preconceived, incorrect notion of what the artist is trying to convey. Either way, I am doing myself a huge disservice by not experiencing each moment in music and by not feeling what the message is for me this day.

For, as the immortal American writer, Henry David Thoreau, brought to light in his renowned classic, Walden, more than 150 years ago:

"Most men have learned to read to serve a paltry convenience, as they have learned to cipher in order to keep accounts and not be cheated in trade; but of reading as a noble intellectual exercise they know little or nothing; yet this only is reading, in a high sense, not that which lulls us as a luxury and suffers the nobler faculties to sleep the while, but what we have to stand on tiptoe to read and devote our most alert and wakeful hours to."

This quote refers to how people read; but the lesson applies to how we listen, as well. I, for one, have not been standing on tiptoe to listen, nor devoting my most alert and wakeful hours to getting the most out of my exchanges with  music. My new mission is to engage the limitless expressions of music and to experience them more fully when I listen; even those pieces I think I know inside and out.

'Cause if I don't, I prove I don't know anything about music.
